Williams has reiterated that George Russell and Nicholas Latifi will continue with the squad in 2021, putting to bed rumours over its line-up.

Williams confirmed in July that Russell and Latifi will again form its pairing next season but doubts emerged in recent weeks.

Rumours suggested that new owners Dorilton Capital, which acquired the company in August, were evaluating whether to replace Russell with Sergio Perez.

Acting team boss Simon Roberts refused to clarify the situation at the Portuguese Grand Prix though Russell stressed that his position was safe and suggested the Perez camp was fuelling rumours.

Ahead of this weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola Roberts, sat alongside his drivers, apologised for the confusion and clarified the situation.

“I probably caused confusion last week,” said Roberts. “We didn’t really want to comment on the drivers’ position.

“Claire [Williams] made the announcement earlier this year and nothing is changed. And this is our driver line-up for this year and next year.

“We are very happy with them and we look forward to working with them in a in a continued way.”

Russell added that “obviously it is always nice to have stability. It is never nice to hear any speculation that your job is potentially up for grabs.

“But nevertheless I was confident in what I could perform on track, and ultimately had to do the talking on the track, and as Simon said I was confident that nothing would change moving into 2021 even with all the speculation going around.

“As I said a lot of the speculation was fed via other team members or team surrounded drivers to create these issues over the last couple of weeks. So definitely happy and pleased to continue on this journey.”
