Unwell Stroll absent from Eifel GP practice

Lance Stroll (CDN) Racing Point F1 Team in the FIA Press Conference. Eifel Grand Prix, Thursday 8th October 2020. Nurbugring, Germany.

Lance Stroll will not participate in final practice for Formula 1’s Eifel Grand Prix due to illness and could miss the remainder of the weekend’s action.

Friday’s running at the Nurburgring was completely abandoned due to persistent wet and misty conditions that meant the medical helicopter was unable to fly.

Stroll did not take to the circuit during the early stages of final practice and TV footage showed his car in the garage without any indication of a mechanical issue.

Racing Point swiftly confirmed that Stroll is “not feeling 100 per cent this morning and will therefore not participate in FP3.

“His condition will be assessed after the session to evaluate whether he is fit to drive, at which point the team will confirm plans for qualifying.”

Under Formula 1 regulations a driver is permitted to participate in qualifying without prior track experience that weekend as the session is classed as a practice session.

It is understood that Nico Hulkenberg, who replaced Sergio Perez at Silverstone when the Mexican contracted Covid-19, has been placed on standby.

Hulkenberg would need to travel to the circuit and undertake a Covid-19 test within the required timeframe.

It is also believed Mercedes reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne is at the circuit – Racing Point, along with McLaren, has an agreement with the manufacturer over loaning Vandoorne and/or Esteban Gutierrez if required.
