Mick Schumacher and Callum Ilott will make their first appearance in a Formula 1 grand prix weekend next month, as both will take part in the FP1 session at the Nurburgring.

Schumacher and Ilott are part of the Ferrari Driver Academy and are currently contending for the Formula 2 championship.

Schumacher will drive for Alfa Romeo for the session, taking over duties from Antonio Giovinazzi, while Ilott will drive for Haas – the American squad has not confirmed who out of Romain Grosjean or Kevin Magnussen will sit out the session.

Ferrari also confirmed that Robert Shwartzman will make his FP1 debut at Abu Dhabi later this year.

“I am overjoyed to get this chance in free practice,” Schumacher said. “The fact that my first participation in a Formula 1 weekend will take place in front of my home audience at the Nürburgring makes this moment even more special.

“I would like to thank Alfa Romeo Racing and the Ferrari Driver Academy for giving me the opportunity to get another taste of Formula 1 air one and a half years after our common test drive in Bahrain.

“For the next 10 days I’m going to prepare myself well, so that I can do the best possible job for the team and gain some valuable data for the weekend.”

Mick Schumacher has taken two Feature Race victories in Formula 2 this year

Ilott added: “It’s a real privilege to get my first run in a free practice session, especially to do it with Haas F1 Team.

“It’s amazing to have this chance at a track that is one of my favorites – it was where I scored the first podium of my career back in 2015.

“The Nurburgring means a lot to me and is a track with a real heritage, so it’s great that I’ll have my first outing at a Formula 1 race weekend there.

“Thanks to Haas F1 Team and to the Ferrari Driver Academy for giving me such a great opportunity. It should be really fun and exciting. I plan to make the most of it, I’m definitely looking forward to it.”

In preparation for their outings, all three will drive Ferrari’s 2018 car at Fiorano on Wednesday.

With just two rounds remaining in the 2020 F2 Championship, Schumacher heads the standings with 191 points, 22 points ahead of second placed Ilott.

Shwartzman, who is the team-mate of Schumacher at Prema, currently rests in fifth place, a further 51 points behind.

Schumacher and Ilott both have prior experience of Formula 1 machinery.

Schumacher ran for Ferrari and Alfa Romeo in Bahrain last year while Ilott had an outing with the Switzerland-based squad in Spain.
