Perez anticipates clarity on 2021 F1 options next week

Sergio Perez says he expects to have a stronger idea on what his options for 2021 are next week, asserting that his desire to stay in Formula 1 remains “very strong”.

It was confirmed earlier this month that Perez will be leaving Racing Point at the end of 2020 after the team opted to sign Sebastian Vettel on a multi-year deal for when it will rebrand to Aston Martin.

Perez has been linked with moves to Haas and Alfa Romeo, who are yet to announce their drivers for the 2021 season.

Perez has been in discussion with other teams and is optimistic that he will have a clearer picture in the coming days.

“There has been, obviously, contact with a couple of teams and talks,” Perez said.

“I think in the next week or so I will know what exactly is a realistic option and what isn’t. But that’s something that I will keep between the teams and myself.

“I think everyone deserves the respect, they have current drivers, current discussions, so it’s something I will keep for myself.”

Perez also stressed that he will only remain in Formula 1 if he can find a project in which he believes.

“I need a motivation to keep going, to be training, to be giving my 100 per cent each lap that I do,” he outlined.

“I must make sure I’m able to get that project, a project that motivates me. If not, I won’t be continuing.”

Perez will leave Racing Point despite signing a multi-year extension with the Silverstone-based team last year.

However, the 30-year-old dismissed any notions of feelings of resentment towards Vettel, as he understands the team will have a competitive car in 2021.

“I don’t have anything against Seb, he’s a great guy, a great driver,” Perez asserted.

“I think he’s coming to a fantastic team, a team that I wished I carried on [with], because I know how good they’re looking, especially for next year.

“I think obviously when you don’t get the outcome you want, you are going to be disappointed,

“But I’ve been very long in this business, I understand the decisions behind it. So no hard feelings.

“I don’t think there’s anything I take personally. I just move on. Whatever comes next, I’m happy with it.”
