Ricciardo eager for ‘unknown’ of new F1 venues

Daniel Ricciardo (AUS) Renault F1 Team RS20. Tuscan Grand Prix, Saturday 12th September 2020. Mugello Italy.

Daniel Ricciardo says he is eager to tackle more new and returning venues across the remainder of the 2020 Formula 1 season, following the sport’s first visit to Mugello.

Formula 1’s original calendar was heavily restructured in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, with over half of the intended grands prix cancelled.

After next weekend’s Russian Grand Prix at the Sochi Autodrom there will be several new or returning circuits across the rest of the season.

The championship will end lengthy absences from the Nurburging, Imola and Istanbul Park and will visit Portugal’s Algarve circuit for the first time.

Bahrain’s Outer Layout will also be used for the Sakhir Grand Prix in place of the usual circuit.

“Looking forward we have got Nürburgring, Istanbul, I won’t name them all but I think it is going to be fun,” said Ricciardo.

“It’s a bit of an unknown for a few of us. Even [at Mugello] learning the track on Friday, I drove it many years ago but learning it in a faster car is cool.

“You try and pick up some lines and some tricks, and that whole process of learning is really fun.”

Renault team-mate Esteban Ocon mirrored Ricciardo’s comments and reckons Formula 1 was right to seek new venues amid the pandemic-hit campaign.

“It has been fun to discover a new track like Mugello, something that has not been done before in F1,” said Ocon.

“Thanks to F1 for bringing those tracks this year. It was probably the right year to try stuff like that.

“It is definitely enjoyable and it was very cool to be racing [at Mugello]. And there are many more [circuits] that we are going to discover this year.”
