Olympic legend Sir Chris Hoy will compete at this year’s Portuguese Grand Prix as part of the Sports Prototype Cup support event.
Hoy, 44, won six gold medals during a prolific career as a track cyclist, but since retiring from two wheels has turned his attention to four-wheeled exploits.
Hoy won the 2015 European Le Mans Series in the LMP3 category and also competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans the following year.
Formula 1 added the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimao to its coronavirus-hit 2020 schedule but its support package has yet to be fully confirmed.
At all eight grands prix so far it has been joined by Formula 2 and Formula 3 but the secondary category is not competing in Portugal while the tertiary class concludes at Mugello this weekend.
The Porsche Supercup, which also acts on Formula 1’s support package, wrapped up its season at Monza.
The Sports Prototype Cup, which uses Revolution A-One machinery, will join Formula 1’s support bill in Portugal.
“I was very impressed by the car and I was very keen to race it,’ said Hoy.
‘That was before Covid changed everything, so when I heard there was an opportunity at Portimão I jumped at the chance.
“It’s a great car, easy to drive and very well engineered, but I know the competition will be tough.
“It’s been a while since I’ve driven a proper downforce car and I really want to make the most of this opportunity.”
