Sainz must be nervous about Ferrari form – Brawn

Charles Leclerc (MON) Ferrari SF1000 leads Carlos Sainz Jr (ESP) McLaren MCL35. Hungarian Grand Prix, Sunday 19th July 2020. Budapest, Hungary.

Formula 1 Managing Director of Motorsports Ross Brawn believes Carlos Sainz Jr. must be “nervous” about his 2021 prospects due to Ferrari’s slump in form.

Sainz Jr. has competed for Toro Rosso, Renault and McLaren since stepping up to Formula 1 in 2015, but will race for Ferrari next season after signing a two-year deal.

Ferrari has been Mercedes’ nearest challenger in recent campaigns, taking race wins, but has suffered a drop in performance in 2020.

Charles Leclerc has salvaged two podiums but neither he nor team-mate Sebastian Vettel scored a single point at the most recent race in Belgium.

Sainz Jr. also endured a lacklustre outcome at Spa-Francorchamps as a power unit issue led to an exhaust failure on the reconnaissance lap.

It meant Sainz Jr. was unable to start the race.

“Carlos hasn’t had a lot of luck in Belgium of late and he drew the short straw once more as a power unit problem led to an exhaust failure that prevented him from taking the start,” said Brawn.

“This has been a tough year for him, but he’s a pretty positive guy. He’s a very strong character, his career has been no easy ride after all.

“I’ve always rated him, I think he’s a great driver and he’ll manage this situation.

“But what looked like a dream move to Ferrari next year isn’t looking too good right now and inevitably, he must be nervous about his prospects next season.”

Sainz Jr.’s recent run means he has scored just once in the past four events but the Spaniard remains confident that he can turn his fortunes around.

“It’s very frustrating to look back and see all the points I’ve missed this season due to different problems,” he said.

“But I prefer to look forward and invest all my energy in the challenges and races ahead.

“I’m feeling good in the car and I’m sure my luck will eventually turn around if we keep focused and keep working hard.”
