Racing Point has confirmed that Nico Hulkenberg will continue to represent the team at this weekend’s 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.

Hulkenberg was drafted in last Friday for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in the wake of regular racer Sergio Perez testing positive for Covid-19.

Hulkenberg qualified 13th but was unable to start the race after a sheared bolt meant that the power unit would not start.

Racing Point awaited clarification on Perez’s situation, and the guidelines issued by Public Health England amid uncertainty on when its quarantine rules changed, and he was cleared on Thursday to return on those rules.

However, he still needed to return a negative test and on Friday morning Racing Point confirmed that Perez again tested positive for Covid-19.

Racing Point stressed that Perez is “physically well and recovering”, and is still self-isolating, but that Hulkenberg will continue in the RP20 at Silverstone.

“I’m excited to get going again with the team at Silverstone,” said Hulkenberg.

“Last weekend, it was a real step into the unknown having been away from the team for a few years – and driving a car I’d never driven before.

“I’ve learned a lot in the last week about the RP20, and I am ready to apply my experiences to this weekend.

“Racing at the same track again makes things a bit easier and the team has done a great job in helping me get up to speed. I think we can fight for points this weekend, which is definitely my goal. I also want to wish Checo all the best in his recovery.”
