FIA president Jean Todt says a part of him would like to see Michael Schumacher’s records live on, but concedes that Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton must be congratulated on their achievements.
Schumacher’s all-time record of seven Drivers’ Championships looks set to be matched by Hamilton this year as the Briton already holds a 30-point advantage after just four races.
Many within the paddock never thought another driver would challenge that record, let alone Schumacher’s win tally which stands at 91.
Hamilton though can match that record this year too, a feat he could ironically achieve at Ferrari’s 1,000th grand prix in Mugello.
Todt, who was Schumacher’s boss at Ferrari when the German dominated the sport, admitted to mixed emotions over the possibility of seeing them surpassed.
“If you have a link to the records, you’d like the records to stay,” Todt told Eurosport.
“On the other side, normally a record has a duration in life. All the records are due to be broken.
“Clearly Mercedes and Lewis are putting everything together to bring the record… clearly it’s admirable. If it’s well-deserved, you can only congratulate him.”
Meanwhile Todt acknowledged that periods of domination, such as Mercedes’ current form, must be admired, even if it’s not what fans want.
“I admire the competitivity, the reliability, the durability,” added the Frenchman.
“But for the sport I think like all of the people like things more unpredictable, they would like to see more change.”
