Kubica gets FP1 outing at scene of F1 race debut

Robert Kubica will drive Alfa Romeo’s C39 during Friday practice at the Hungaroring, the scene of his Formula 1 debut for the team back in 2006.

Kubica, 35, joined Alfa Romeo as its reserve driver for the 2020 campaign and sampled its C39 during pre-season testing in Spain and in FP1 at the Styrian Grand Prix.

Kubica made his Formula 1 debut for the team, under its BMW Sauber guise, at the Hungaroring in 2006.

Three years ago the Hungaroring was the venue for Kubica’s first public outing in a Formula 1 car since his rally crash, when he participated in post-race testing for Renault.

Kubica will replace Kimi Raikkonen for the opening 90-minute session.

“Driving one of these cars is always an incredible feeling and therefore I can’t wait for Friday,” said Kubica.

“Emotions aside, we cannot forget how crucial car development is, especially in this compressed 2020 season.

“The team needs data and feedback and providing as much valuable information is what I am here for.

“We had a productive weekend last time out and my aim is to help the team make another step forward here in Hungary.”

Alfa Romeo has endured a difficult start to the 2020 campaign with Antonio Giovinazzi scoring its sole points at the attrition-filled Austrian Grand Prix.

Neither Giovinazzi nor team-mate Raikkonen have yet made it out of Q1.
