Daniel Ricciardo was given the all-clear by Formula 1’s medical crew after a hefty shunt during the opening stages of second practice for the Styrian Grand Prix.
Ricciardo lost control of the R.S.20 as he rounded Turn 9 on his second push lap in the afternoon session, suffering a sizeable impact with the barriers.
Ricciardo was pictured limping after extracting himself from the wreckage and was taken for a check-up, where doctors gave him the green light to return to the garage.
“I’m okay, I hit my knee on the steering column when it came in so I’m just a bit bruised, but they checked, it’s just some bruising, all’s good, I’m fine,” he said.
“The car was pretty beaten up, so yeah, I feel obviously bad of course for not only my knee but for the boys and the team.
“I was trying to understand what went wrong in that it’s one of those ones that went so quickly.
“I turned in, maybe a bit of a tailwind helped me out with losing the rear, but nothing with the car broke so it was obviously just on me.
“Fortunately I don’t do those things too often but today I did. Sorry guys.”
Expanding on the crash further, Ricciardo said: “I had this morning a little bit of sliding there but the exit, on the entry it was pretty good, it’s normally pretty nailed on the entry there.
“It was probably just a bit of… it was my first lap, the tyres were there, but little bit of wind, just coming in with a bit too much speed for those conditions.
“It’s all good. We’ll be good for tomorrow, should be okay.”
