‘We don’t have space for Vettel’ at Aston Martin says team boss

(L to R): Sebastian Vettel (GER) Ferrari with Sergio Perez (MEX) Racing Point F1 Team

Sebastian Vettel’s options for 2021 are rapidly narrowing after Red Bull said it was a “definite no” to the German returning, and now Aston Martin – currently known as Racing Point – has said it has no room for the four-time Formula 1 World Champion.

Vettel has been left without a seat after Ferrari chose not to offer him a new contract. The German has said he will look for a seat elsewhere, highlighting both Red Bull and Aston Martin, or other options including retirement and a sabbatical.

“I think Racing Point made a very strong impression, and are certainly in a good place for this year,” Vettel said of the team this week.

“It’s obviously a good opportunity for them this year to have a good car to fight with and try and improve from there.”

However the first two options are no longer open and with very few other seats available, it’s increasingly looking likely that the 33-year-old won’t be on the grid in ’21.

“It is flattering that everyone thinks a four-time world champion should come to our team, but maybe that’s because the car is a bit quicker now,” said Racing Point team boss Otmar Szafnauer.

“But we have long contracts with both of our drivers, so it would only be logical that we don’t have space.”

Racing Point has a deal for Perez next year and Lance Stroll’s position is believed to be safe given his father, Lawrence Stroll, heads up a consortium which controls the team and Aston Martin, which will take over control of the outfit at the end of the current season.
