F1 bracing for risk of Saturday washout at Styrian GP
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Formula 1 teams are preparing for the possibility of no track running on Saturday at the Styrian Grand Prix due to the forecast of torrential rain.

Formula 1 has stayed on at the Red Bull Ring for back-to-back events but forecasts indicate that thunderstorms and heavy rain is likely to deluge the area on Saturday.

It raises the possibility that no track action will be able to take place.

The forecast is due to be hot and sunny through Friday while dry and cooler conditions are expected on Sunday.

“We have gathered info from the race director already giving a kind of pre-warning that there is a risk no session is happening tomorrow because of thunderstorms or heavy rain,” said McLaren’s Andreas Seidl.

“It is still open if there is qualifying on Sunday morning or if that’s not possible because the weather could be bad then FP2 would count.”

All of Saturday’s action at last year’s Japanese Grand Prix was cancelled due to the impact of Typhoon Hagibis on the region.

On that occasion support events were cancelled while qualifying took place on Sunday morning.
