Honda gives PUs all-clear after Red Bull’s Austrian GP failures

Honda has confirmed that neither Red Bull driver suffered damage to their power unit in the wake of retiring from last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen retired during the early stages of the opening round of the campaign while team-mate Alexander Albon pulled to the side of the track with a few laps to go.

The failures were attributed to separate electrical issues.

It marked Red Bull’s first failure to score a point at a grand prix since Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo’s collision in Azerbaijan two years ago.

Formula 1 has stayed on at the Red Bull Ring for the Styrian Grand Prix and Honda has confirmed that countermeasures have been installed in a bid to combat the electrical issues.

“This weekend, we race at the same track – the first time this has happened in the championship’s history,” said Honda’s Formula 1 Technical Director Toyoharu Tanabe.

“It means that our data is up to date and relevant, although one factor that could affect our work is the forecast for rain and even thunderstorms over the coming weekend.

“The problems on the two Red Bull Racing cars in the last race were both electrical, but caused by different issues.

“We have been analysing both these matters together with the teams and we have put countermeasures in place for this weekend.

“As our power units do not have any damage caused by those issues, Max and Alex will use their same PUs this weekend.

“This weekend, we must aim to finish the race with all four cars and achieve a good result with them.”
