Organisers of the Dutch Grand Prix have confirmed that the event’s return to the Formula 1 championship has been delayed until 2021.

Formula 1 was due to return to a renovated Zandvoort Circuit in May after a 35-year absence but the coronavirus pandemic forced the event’s postponement.

Officials held out hope of rescheduling the event but accepted earlier this month that it was unlikely that the grand prix could take place in 2020.

On Thursday it was formally announced that Zandvoort will not feature on any revised 2020 schedule.

It is the fourth planned Formula 1 race this year to be officially cancelled, joining Australia, Monaco and France on the list.

“We were completely ready for this first race and we still are,” said Dutch Grand Prix Sporting Director Jan Lammers.

“An unbelievable achievement has been made thanks to all the fans, the companies and the governments involved.

“We and Formula 1 have investigated the potential to hold a rescheduled race this year without spectators, but we would like to celebrate this moment, the return of Formula 1 in Zandvoort, together with our racing fans in the Netherlands.

“We ask everyone to be patient. I had to look forward to it for 35 years, so I can wait another year.”

Fans who had tickets for the 2020 event will be able to carry them over to the 2021 grand prix, or request a refund.

Formula 1 is due to begin its delayed 2020 season with two races in Austria in July.
