Pierre Gasly has unveiled the winning helmet design which he will use for the opening grand prix of the 2020 Formula 1 season.
The AlphaTauri racer held a competition to design his season-opening race helmet, with artist Laura Itzel Estrada announced the winner with her bright blue and purple abstract design and the slogan ‘Full Gas’.
“Here it is! Thanks @LitzelArt for your design. This is the helmet I’ll wear for the first race of the season. I wanted to go for something quite different and new,” wrote Gasly.
The first race is set to be the Austrian GP in July, which will be a double-header across consecutive weekends.
With the FIA lifting its ban on multiple helmet designs per season, Gasly revealed further entries would be used for later races.
“Thanks for all your designs, so many were amazing, and I’ll use some of your ideas for the rest of the year!”
Previously drivers were limited to one main design which must remain largely unchanged throughout the season, though they were allowed one exception for a special race, such as a home grand prix.
This was done to make it easier to identify drivers by their helmets, but has now been scrapped following the introduction of permanent driver numbers and the fact helmets are now largely obscured by the halo head protection device.
