Williams has recruited long-term McLaren figure Simon Roberts to take up the newly-created role of Managing Director at its Formula 1 team.

Roberts has spent the bulk of the last two decades with McLaren in various roles, including Operations Director, General Manager and, since 2017, Chief Operations Officer.

He was also seconded to Force India for the 2009 season as its Chief Operations Officer when the team embarked upon a collaborative relationship with McLaren.

Roberts, who will take up his new role on June 1, will be responsible for the design and development process, racing, factory operations and planning, reporting to Chief Executive Officer Mike O’Driscoll.

“Simon will bring enormous experience and knowledge to the Williams team, and we are delighted that he is joining us when we head back to work after this long enforced F1 shutdown,” said Deputy Team Principal Claire Williams.

“He will lead a highly talented team that’s looking forward to designing and developing the next generation of Williams F1 cars.”

Williams is in the midst of its worst slump in its 40-year history, having finished at the foot of the 10-team Constructors’ Championship for the past two seasons.

It failed to make it out of the first segment of qualifying at any grand prix and collected just one point.

It will field George Russell and Nicholas Latifi as its driver line-up if and when the Formula 1 season can begin.
