Updated International Sporting Code removes unanimity requirement
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Motorsport’s governing body, the FIA, has implemented an updated clause into its International Sporting Code in order to remove the need for unanimous decisions.

Motorsport championships are on hiatus due to the ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus crisis.

Several categories and teams face uncertain futures due to the unparalleled nature of the situation, with regulation changes having been enacted in a litany of championships.

On Friday the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council approved the introduction of a safeguard clause in the International Sporting Code.

The safeguard clause will overcome the current requirement to obtain the unanimous agreement of all competitors to amend regulations within an individual FIA championship.

It means decisions will now only require a majority and will ostensibly be undertaken in a swifter manner.

The clause will only be required “in exceptional circumstances” and “if the FIA considers that the change in question is essential for the safeguarding of the championship.”
