Organisers of the Canadian Grand Prix have set an Easter deadline for a decision on whether its event will go ahead as planned.
The grand prix is due to take place at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on 12-14 June and is currently slated to be the opening round of the 2020 season.
Formula 1 has already postponed all events up until that point while Monaco – originally scheduled for late May – has been cancelled altogether.
“We would have to make a decision by Easter weekend,” Canadian Grand Prix promoter Francois Dumontier is quoted by the BBC, referring to 11/12 April.
“If the situation has improved by then, we could have the site ready on schedule.
“We’re in a better position than Monaco or Baku where they race through the city streets and have to build a track.
“We have the track. We’re optimistic but we also know things change by the hour, so we’re also realistic.”
Dumontier added that Canada would aim for another slot on any revised calendar but remains wary that weather limitations in Quebec would be a hindrance.
“Obviously, as we know, I will not be able to present the Canadian Grand Prix in November in Montreal,” he said.
“It has to be within the months that allow it; we would be talking about the end of summer, or the beginning of fall.”
