Kubica fastest as second test gets underway
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Alfa Romeo test driver Robert Kubica clocked the fastest time during the opening morning of the second Formula 1 pre-season test of 2020.

Kubica vaulted to the top of the timesheets by clocking a lap of 1:16.942s on the C5 tyres at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain.

Only Mercedes has gone faster so far in pre-season testing.

AlphaTauri’s running was delayed by a loose pipe but Pierre Gasly returned to action to finish second, 0.598s behind Kubica, while Alexander Albon’s programme was also delayed on account of Red Bull undertaking suspension work.

Reigning World Champion Lewis Hamilton classified fourth overall, amassing the most mileage as he completed 89 laps.

Lance Stroll was fifth for Racing Point while Sebastian Vettel caused one of two red flags when he spun exiting Turn 8.

Vettel drifted wide through the left-right kink and dipped a wheel into the gravel, sending the Ferrari rotating, before he fully spun in the opposite direction.

Vettel safely negotiated his way back to the pit lane but officials red-flagged the session in order to clear the circuit of gravel.

The other red flag of the day was caused when Williams rookie Nicholas Latifi came to a halt along the back straight.

Latifi placed ninth, behind Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo and McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr., but classified ahead of Haas driver Romain Grosjean.

Grosjean’s best lap was nonetheless just 1.7s down on pacesetter Kubica.

All bar Haas will swap drivers for the afternoon session.

Wednesday’s afternoon session will run for four hours, beginning at 14:00 local time
