Pirelli has officially taken the wraps off the 18-inch tyres that will be used in Formula 2 this season.

Formula 1 will move from 13-inch to 18-inch tyres from 2021 but feeder category Formula 2 will make the switch for the upcoming campaign.

Testing has been ongoing in private since last summer on a mule car, with a brief public demonstration run carried out in Italy in September, and on Thursday the finalised product was unveiled.

Alongside the cosmetic difference of the larger rims the tyres have a smaller sidewall compared to their predecessors.

Pirelli has been the championship’s sole tyre supplier since 2011, when the category was known as GP2.

Formula 2 teams will have only three days of official testing on the 18-inch tyres in Bahrain in early March, ahead of the season-opening round at the same venue later in the month.

Formula 2 will use the same F2/18 package that was introduced into the championship for the 2018 season.

Formula 1 first trialled 18-inch tyres mid-2014 during in-season testing and the green-light was given for the switch next year as part of the overhauled sporting and technical regulations.

Pirelli has carried out Formula 1 running on prototype 18-inch tyres since September and will allocate all of its private 2020 test days to further evaluation of the new product.
