Canada has waited 29 years for another Grand Prix winner, and Alberta’s fans have kept watching

Aston Martin has opted not to bring upgrades to Canada

When Lance Stroll lined up 21st in Singapore on Sunday and crossed the line 20th, he left Marina Bay still without a point after 17 rounds of the 2026 season.

For Canadian Formula 1 fans it was a familiar kind of weekend. No Canadian has won a Grand Prix since Jacques Villeneuve took the chequered flag at the Nürburgring in September 1997, the year he became the country’s only world champion, and the family story is back in the spotlight this autumn, with Jacques speaking openly about his father’s legacy ahead of a new biopic that was set for its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 19 September.

Fans in Alberta follow all of this from a long way out. The nearest Grand Prix is roughly a four-hour flight away in Montreal, and this year the province’s racing crowd has watched its own home rules change in a completely different arena. Since 13 July, Albertans have been able to choose from a regulated field of legal online casinos in Alberta instead of a single government site, and the window for sites that had been serving the province without registration closed on 13 October, two days after the Singapore race.

A long wait measured in near misses

Stroll has come closest of the current generation. He stood on the podium in Baku in 2017 as a rookie, took pole position in a wet Turkish Grand Prix in 2020 and added a Monza podium that same season. A win has never followed, and 2026 has been the hardest year yet. Under the new technical rules Aston Martin has scored five points all season, none of them his, and at his home race on 24 May he started from the back of the grid and finished 15th while Kimi Antonelli won ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

Canadian fandom has always been built on patience rather than a steady stream of results. Gilles Villeneuve won six times for Ferrari, the last of them at Jarama in 1981, before his death at Zolder the following year. His son delivered the title sixteen years after Gilles’ last victory. Since Villeneuve’s last race in 2006, only Stroll and Nicholas Latifi have held full-time seats, and supporters from Calgary to Halifax have learned to measure a good season in small gains.

What changed at home this year

Alberta was no stranger to online gaming before this summer. PlayAlberta, run by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission, has operated since 1 October 2020. What arrived on 13 July was competition: private operators that register with AGLC and sign a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation can now offer games to adults in the province.

The field filled quickly. Twenty-two sites were ready on day one, and by mid-October the AiGC directory listed 51 registered sites. The minimum age is 18, a year younger than in Ontario, and advertising from approved operators has to carry the AiGC logo and point anyone who wants help towards 211 Alberta. For a fan unsure whether a site is legitimate, the directory is the quickest test: if a brand is missing from it, it is not one of Alberta’s regulated casino sites.

The Montreal trip comes with a catch

Anyone who has made the pilgrimage to the Canadian Grand Prix knows the geography of Notre Dame Island well. Circuit Gilles Villeneuve shares the island with Casino de Montréal, the largest casino in the country, housed in two former Expo 67 pavilions, and race weekend shuttles even drop spectators at a gate named after it.

That venue belongs to Loto-Québec, and the online picture in Quebec is just as tightly held, with the Crown corporation running the only legal site. An Alberta account does not follow its owner east. The AiGC’s own answers to common player questions are blunt on this point: players must be physically inside Alberta’s borders to log in or play with a regulated operator.

Ontario runs its own separate system through iGaming Ontario for players aged 19 and over, and British Columbia and Manitoba keep PlayNow as their provincial option. Canada’s F1 fans share one national team in spirit, but when it comes to online play they live under different rule books depending on which side of a provincial border they are standing.

Six races left, and a reason to keep watching

The season resumes in Austin on 25 October, with the race starting in the early afternoon Alberta time. Mexico City follows a week later, then São Paulo, Las Vegas, Qatar and a finale in Abu Dhabi on 6 December. Stroll has six more chances to open his 2026 account, although Aston Martin will need to find considerably more pace for that to look realistic.

For the Albertan who settles in to watch Austin from a living room in Red Deer or Lethbridge, the home market now looks a little more like the sport itself, where nobody races until scrutineers have checked the car against a published rule book. The sensible approach to a casino site is the same one Canadian fans have applied to F1 for 29 years. Settle the budget before the lights go out, and stick to it whatever happens on the final lap.
