Baku’s reputation for chaos faces its biggest test yet

Nine races. Nine safety car deployments. Two red flags. Baku City Circuit has built a reputation few other venues on the Formula 1 calendar can match, and this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix arrives with a title fight tight enough that another slice of that chaos could reshape the championship outright.

The numbers back up the sense of dread teams feel walking into the paddock there. One independent motorsport statistics tracker has logged a safety car in well over half of every race held on the circuit since it entered the calendar, and 2017’s edition alone produced four separate interventions in a single afternoon. Long straights funnelling into a castle-walled hairpin do that to a field of cars running inches apart at 340kph. Nobody who has watched Baku before expects a clean 51 laps this time either.

Max Verstappen’s 2021 tyre blowout while leading late on, which handed the win to Sergio Pérez instead, and Daniel Ricciardo’s win from tenth on the grid a few years earlier, are the kind of results the circuit keeps producing when it should, on paper, reward the cleanest race. Charles Leclerc’s qualifying crash there in 2019, which handed pole to a stunned Bottas, is the other cautionary tale drivers bring up when Baku comes around on the calendar.

A circuit that rewards close attention

That unpredictability is exactly why so many fans now follow the race weekend through more than just the broadcast. Timing screens, tyre strategy trackers and betting sites have become part of how a growing slice of the audience actually experiences a grand prix weekend, checking live odds shift lap by lap in the same way they would watch a gap to the car ahead close on a timing tower.

It is a habit that has grown alongside the sport itself. F1’s own recent fan research points to double-digit year-on-year growth in the sport’s global audience through 2025, with more than half of new fans arriving under the age of 35 — a generation that treats second-screen engagement as the default way to watch a race, not an add-on bolted onto the TV coverage.

Baku rewards that kind of attention more than most rounds. The circuit’s mix of a 2.2km back straight and a technical castle section means strategy calls swing on split-second decisions, and safety car timing can flip the entire complexion of a race in the time it takes the pack to bunch up behind it. A driver who qualifies mid-grid can be leading by lap 15 purely because of where a yellow flag fell, and that volatility is precisely what keeps the circuit’s odds boards moving all weekend rather than settling early. Fans hunting the best betting sites for the weekend tend to gravitate toward whichever platform gives them the clearest live odds movement rather than a static pre-race price, because a Baku race rarely stays still long enough for a fixed number to mean much by lap 20.

The title picture sharpens the stakes

There is a title-race context sharpening all of this too. George Russell’s championship hopes have been fading fast in recent rounds as his team-mate has pulled clear at the front, and Motorsport Week’s own analysis of how he could still find positives from a possible title defeat lands right as Baku threatens to compress the gap at the top of the standings even further. A driver under that kind of pressure, on a circuit that punishes the smallest error with a wall inches from the racing line, is precisely the sort of ingredient that turns a mid-season round into one of the year’s most-watched.

None of that guarantees fireworks. Baku has produced dull processions too, most notably in the years the safety car stayed in the garage and the leader simply drove away from the field. But the base rate is what makes this weekend different from a typical Spanish or British round. When nine out of nine races on the calendar have carried a real chance of a red flag, a mechanical failure at the worst possible moment, or a restart that scrambles the top ten, treating it as just another entry on the calendar undersells what is actually at stake this Sunday.

For anyone who has sat through a Baku Grand Prix before, none of this will be a surprise. The circuit has earned its reputation lap by lap, safety car by safety car, and this weekend gives it another chance to add to the list. Strategists will be watching tyre windows, the title contenders will be watching each other, and everyone else will be watching to see whether the castle section decides another race the way it has decided nearly every Baku round so far.
