Is the 2026 F1 title race over? What Antonelli’s Monza win did to the numbers

Kimi Antonelli reveals details ‘weird’ Q3 at F1 Italian GP
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Kimi Antonelli arrived at Monza with an engine penalty, a 19th-place grid slot and a team-mate starting on the front row. He left Italy with a seventh win of the season and a bigger championship lead than he had when he got there.

That sequence explains why the 2026 drivers’ title has stopped feeling like a contest. With ten rounds left, the question is no longer who wins it, but when the arithmetic makes it official.

F1 2026 drivers’ standings after the Italian Grand Prix

Antonelli sits on 267 points. George Russell is second on 201, a deficit of 66 after arriving at Monza 59 adrift and expecting to close. Lewis Hamilton holds third on 191, Lando Norris fourth on 171, and Charles Leclerc fifth on 155 after scoring nothing at Ferrari’s home race.

Ten rounds remain — ten grands prix and a single Sprint — which leaves 258 points available. Russell is mathematically alive but needs to outscore his team-mate by 67 across those rounds, an average swing of nearly seven points per weekend against a driver who has won seven times already. Bookmakers have priced the title accordingly, and anyone tracking those markets through the run-in can use the promo code for hollywoodbets today.

How Antonelli won the Italian Grand Prix from 19th

The power unit change dropped him from seventh in qualifying to the back of the grid, and the race looked like damage limitation. Leclerc’s heavy crash at the final corner brought out the red flag on lap two of 53, and Antonelli was already up to 12th when it flew.

Fresh medium tyres at the restart turned the afternoon. He worked his way onto Russell’s tail, then took a second stop under the Virtual Safety Car triggered by Lance Stroll’s stoppage, rejoining sixth and around 14 seconds behind. Russell stayed out on used hards that faded. Antonelli closed, ran wide through the gravel at the first chicane on his first attempt, and completed the pass three laps from the end.

Kimi Antonelli leads the Driver’s Championship by 66 points after Monza.

He became the first Italian to win at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966. He is 20 years old and celebrated his birthday twelve days before the race.

Why Russell’s own words matter more than the gap

The Briton was candid afterwards, saying he had stopped thinking in terms of a comeback and would focus on winning races instead. Drivers rarely concede anything in public with ten rounds left, which tells you how the second Mercedes garage reads the situation.

The problem for Russell is not raw pace. He took the front row at Monza, led much of the race and finished second. The problem is that his best available weekend — with his rival starting 19th — produced a seven-point loss.

Mercedes are running away with the constructors’ championship

The one-two at Monza pushed Mercedes to 468 points, 122 clear of Ferrari, with nine race wins from thirteen rounds. Ferrari’s afternoon summed up their season, with Leclerc in the barriers and Hamilton recovering only to sixth after running third at the restart.

That gap matters for the drivers’ title too. A team with a car this dominant has little incentive to intervene between its drivers, which removes the one variable that could realistically compress the championship.

Madrid is the next test of the 2026 title picture

The Spanish Grand Prix runs at the Madring on 11 September. It is the first proper read on whether anyone has found an answer to Mercedes over the summer, on a circuit far tighter than Monza.

Max Verstappen took his fifth podium of the year at Monza and remains the most likely disruptor, though sixth in the standings on 127 points puts him out of the title conversation. McLaren took fourth and fifth through Norris and Oscar Piastri, respectable without threatening the front.

What could still go wrong for Antonelli

The Monza grid penalty is the clue. Taking a fresh power unit in September means the allocation is already stretched, and a further change would bring another drop down the order. He got away with it once at a circuit that rewards overtaking. Doing so again at a tighter track would cost far more.

Reliability is the other unknown. Russell’s Canadian Grand Prix retirement came from a battery failure — a reminder that the 2026 power units are new and not yet fully proven. Two mechanical failures in the closing rounds would change the arithmetic quickly.

Beyond that, the case for a comeback is thin. Antonelli has seven wins, six poles and eleven podiums this season, having finished seventh in the standings as a rookie last year with 150 points. He now has more than that from thirteen rounds alone.

The title is not mathematically settled and will not be for several races yet. What Monza did was remove the last scenario in which Russell could realistically take it back. His rival started 19th on a weekend built for him, and still gained seven points.
