Supreme Ash Sutton wins again in the BTCC at Knockhill Race 2

Knockhill‘s Race 2 could be the defining moment in the British Touring Car Championship, with Ash Sutton storming to another win while Tom Ingram failed to finish.

Fresh from the jubilation of scoring Cataclean Plato Racing’s first victory in Race 1, Adam Morgan led the field away as the lights went out.

Joined by Dan Rowbottom and Gordon Shedden on the mandated medium compound, the trio were expected to be threatened by the soft-running trio of NAPA Racing UK’s Ash Sutton and the Team VERTU pair of Ricky Collard and Tom Ingram.

And, when the lights went out, Sutton did breeze by Shedden, before Rowbottom got by Morgan at the end of Duffus Dip.

Ingram found himself in the pits at the end of the first tour with significant damage to his front-end, as a stranded Aiden Moffat also brought out the safety car after losing his back-end at Duffus Dip.

Team VERTU found the damage to Ingram’s car to be irreparable, after the #80 ran into the back of Shedden at the Black Circles Chicane. While it is too soon to call it official, a nightmare Sunday for Ingram at Knockhill will likely prove the end of his distant title hopes.

Racing resumed on the sixth tour, with the race extended to 27 laps.

The racing at the front focused on Morgan and Sutton, with the Ford Focus launching past the Mercedes and into P2 at McIntyre’s. A lap later, Collard completed a similar move to get by Shedden into P4.

And as the pair of Mercedes fought hard to keep their places on the medium compound, a lightning-fast Sutton out-broke Rowbottom at Taylor’s Hairpin to take the lead on lap 11.

Away from the shine at the front, Dan Cammish (P8) and Charles Rainford (P11) were enjoying excellent outings – both up 10 places from their start. Moments later, Rainford would send Árón Taylor-Smith wide on the exit of the final hairpin to take his P10.

The WSR man’s fantastic drive would continue as he dispatched his BMW teammate on lap 15, then passed Cammish and Dexter Patterson on lap 17. At the same time, Shedden’s fall continued as Mikey Doble went through, before Rainford too would get by on lap 18.

Morgan’s firm defence finally faltered as Collard took P3 on lap 19, down the inside at McIntyre’s, while Daryl De Leon was sent into the barriers by Cammish – though he could reverse himself out of the gravel.

Another car found the gravel on lap 22, with Chris Smiley stranded, as Doble got by Morgan for P4. Two laps later, the stewards would call for the safety car.

Thanks to excellent work from the circuit workers, racing would resume with a one-lap sprint to the finish.

Sutton stormed away immediately, while Rowbottom found himself under an onslaught from Collard and Doble, while Morgan tried to hold off Rainford.

And, at the flag, it was Sutton who took yet-another win in the British Touring Car Championship, followed by Rowbottom and Collard to round out the podium.

Doble followed, while Morgan did keep Rainford behind. Shedden, Patterson, Cammish, and Sam Osborne would fill out the top 10, with Lewis Selby, Tom Chilton, Taylor-Smith, James Dorlin, and Josh Cook completing the points.
