The Rocky Balboa-style story could make or break George Russell’s 2026 F1 season

George Russell finds himself facing a herculean task of overturning a 59-point deficit to Mercedes team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli in Formula 1 this season.

Russell came into the 2026 season as the title favourite. The W17 was clearly the benchmark for the field after pre-season testing, and the Briton was assumed to lead the Brackley-based squad into F1’s latest era.

The Mercedes driver won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, further reinforcing his title credentials. But it all unravelled pretty quickly for the Briton from thereon.

Heading into the summer break, Russell finds himself 59 points adrift of his team-mate Antonelli – who leads the title race for Mercedes in only his sophomore year in the sport.

Speaking on the Up to Speed podcast, former F1 driver David Coulthard called the 28-year-old’s season so far a “shocker”.

After his triumph at the Albert Park Circuit, Russell had struggled to extract the maximum from his package. His plight was only being augmented by reliability issues and “bad luck”.

“It’s been a shocker. How much bad luck can one person have?” Coulthard surmised.

“On one side, that bad luck is something that the team have to work through. On the other side, George is now not on the crest of a wave.

“It’s like when you see a tennis player: they’ve got the high ball, and it’s going to be an easy smash to win the point, and then they put it in the net because they start overthinking it.”

The comeback that even “Rocky” cannot complete

Reliability issues in China and Canada were compounded by yet another set of power unit gremlins for Russell at Belgium, which saw him make contact with Lewis Hamilton and retire on the very first lap at Spa.

At the Hungarian GP, Russell went into anti-stall at the start, and despite a resolute recovery drive back into the points, he ceded further ground to Antonelli in the standings.

Slipping down to third, behind Hamilton, Coulthard reckons Russell is going to have a tough time clawing any advantage back in the second-half of 2026.

“George is in that phase of the season where Kimi is just instinctively driving and having, other than Barcelona, some pretty good reliability, whereas George has been taking the punches and he’s a little bit older,” he explained.

“Experience is a good thing, but the benefit of youth is you don’t know what you don’t know.

“The downside of experience is you do know the challenges and the difficulty and momentum and all those good things.

“As we know from Max Verstappen last year, it’s still possible to come back from that points deficit.

“But listen, not even Sylvester Stallone would write a Rocky movie with that sort of comeback from all the punches that he’s taken. So it’s going to be a character-building year for George.”

Russell will hope to embark on his Verstappen-esque comeback at the Red Bull driver’s final home race, the Dutch GP, once F1 resumes after the summer break.
