With just two weekends left in the FIA Formula 3 championship, the battle for the title is heating up, with Ugo Ugochukwu and Freddie Slater going toe-to-toe.
Just eight points separate the Briton and the American, a gap that has raged since lights out in Australia. But who has the momentum into summer break and who has the determination and package to get the championship across the line?
A look at the season so far
Ugochukwu made a strong start at the beginning of the year, hitting the ground running in Melbourne with a Feature Race victory which saw him take the Driver’s Championship lead in the first round.
Ugochukwu struggled in his first season of F3, but with a move from PREMA to Campos Racing, the American was determined to be a contender in the 2026 championship fight.
In a championship that relies on consistency, Ugochukwu settled into a rhythm of podiums and points finishes. He took back-to-back podiums in Barcelona, Austria and Silverstone.
Across the Silverstone weekend, Ugochukwu went on to break records, with a victory in the Feature Race by a margin of 17.023 seconds.
The first 5 rounds of the season saw the Campos driver score points at every weekend and take a commanding lead in the championship.
Slater had an equally strong start to the year. It was clear he had the pace as he took podiums in Melbourne, Monaco, and Barcelona. However, there was one thing missing from Slater’s campaign.
Where Ugochukwu had two victories in the first half, Slater had yet to stand on the top step.
Despite taking a podium in every round, it wasn’t until the final race before summer break that Slater finally took his maiden F3 Victory. As he broke the wait with his victory, he equally broke Ugochukwu’s resolve and moved ahead in the championship.
Who holds the momentum?
Despite Ugochukwu leading the championship for the first six rounds, his momentum began slipping long before.
After his record-breaking weekend in Silverstone, the American suffered a difficult run of form in Spa. In the Sprint Race, Ugochukwu made contact with Slater, which took both out of the race.
In the Feature, he suffered a similar fate after contact with his teammate Theophile Nael. He was able to continue in the race but finished at the back of the field.
It was another slow start to the weekend in Hungary, with Ugochukwu getting a penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage, which pushed him down the order and out of the points.
Into the final feature race ahead of summer break, the championship rivals went into the race equal on 104 points.
Slater took the victory in Hungary with a commanding determination that secured his place in the championship lead for the first time in the season.
However, it wasn’t just in the single victory that Slater beat Ugochukwu but rather his slow and steady climb and consistency.
From the two points won in each of his back-to-back pole positions to the fact that he took only four races with no points in the 14 races.
Though Slater takes on the momentum, the summer break will offer the drivers a chance to rest and reapproach the final two rounds of the year. Slater has the lead, but with the gap only eight points, the battle is far from over.
Monza and Madrid
In Septmber the 30-driver grid will return. Slater and Ugochukwu will have two weekends to fight tooth and nail for the title.
Madrid offers a new challenge, with back-to-back feature races to make up for the lost round in Bahrain due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
This means that for Ugochukwu and Slater, there will be over 50 points on offer in Madrid alone.
That comes with benefits. If leaving Monza, the gap has continued to grow or either championship contender struggles, they’ll still have two qualifying sessions and two feature races to fight back.
However, it also opens the door for the others on the grid to make a last-minute charge for the title. Nael, Ugochukwu’s teammate, has had a rollercoaster season and currently sits third in the standings.
Despite the 55 points that separate Nael from the lead, the nature of Formula 3 leaves nothing guaranteed.
The first session in Monza will set the tone for the final stint.
Slater will be hoping to continue the run of form which took him into the championship lead, but Ugochukwu will be there with him, putting the struggles of the previous round behind him and looking to take the F3 championship title.
Neither driver will give in easily, and the fight will no doubt take the duo into the final race.
