Lewis Hamilton led the way for Ferrari in FP2 for this weekend’s Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, with Charles Leclerc completing a dominant 1-2.
The Scuderia had been handed a tentative status as potential favourites for this weekend’s race at the Hungaroring, and both sessions today appeared to corroborate this claim.
With Leclerc, despite a late gearbox problem, coming top in FP1, Hamilton was not far behind in third, and in the second hour of running, the SF-26 showed its nous around a circuit of the Hungaroring’s slower profile.
A 1:18.729s was enough to see the Briton come out quickest, a tenth and a half ahead of Leclerc, and half a second ahead of Lando Norris in third.
Max Verstappen maintained interest for Red Bull with fourth spot, ahead of George Russell in fifth, the Mercedes driver complaining of an “extremely bad” feeling from his car.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli was down in 13th place, having sat out FP1 for reserve driver Frederik Vesti, with Audi and Racing Bulls once again looking like they will be the key protagonists in the midfield.
For Aston Martin, its encouraging start in FP1, that was truncated by Lance Stroll’s suspension issue, was dampened further with the failure to repair the Canadian’s car in time for the second session.
Fernando Alonso, having finished 13th on Hard tyres in FP1, was 19th, splitting the Cadillacs of Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez.
