Ivan Ortola secured his second Moto2 victory of the season at the Sachsenring after cruising to a dominant flag-to-flag win.
Ortola’s tyres looked evidently done, but he successfully fended off late pressure from CFMoto rider Daniel Holgado.
He launched well off the line to take the holeshot into Turn 1, while Pramac’s Izan Guevara and CFMoto’s Holgado overtook championship leader Manuel Gonzalez.
Agius, Gonzalez and Alonso all went three-wide into Turn 1 on Lap 2, but due to track space, Gonzalez was squeezed out and fell to sixth.
Holgado claimed second position, which caused the front trio to draw closer to Agius behind, bringing the Australian back into the prime contention.
The first portion of the race saw all six riders carefully managing pace, with all six remaining within touching distance and separated by just 2.5 seconds.
Ortola held a half-second lead on lap 11, and in the middle phase of the race, the Spaniard appeared to up the ante, stretching his advantage by a couple of tenths.
Aron Canet and Celestino Vietti crashed out at Turn 1 on Lap 15 and Lap 16, respectively, putting an end to a difficult race weekend.
Holgado and Guevera fluctuated around 0.4s and 0.5s behind Ortola for the following laps, but the Pramac rider in third was poised to make a move to take second place.
On track action accelerated as Alonso took fourth off Agius as he slowly started to catch up to the lead trio, but an abrupt and small highside into Turn 3 put an end to his race.
As a result of Alonso’s crash, the Intact GP duo of Agius and Manuel Gonzalez dropped further behind the leading trio, but the gaps between Ortola, Holgado and Guevara also began to grow.
Incredibly, Holgado found something to catch up to the back of Ortola, as he had marginally better tyre wear, but couldn’t quite find the best overtaking opportunity.
Holgado wrapped up second place, ahead of Pramac’s Izan Guevara, who took third place.
Agius managed to secure fourth to finish as the IntactGP rider, fending off late pressure from Taiyo Furusato, who overtook Gonzalez in the closing laps.
Filip Salac claimed seventh place as he defeated both KTM riders Jose Antonio Rueda and Colin Veijer.
Luca Lunetta rounded off the top-10 positions, edging out his team-mate Adiran Huertas and American rider Joe Roberts.
Ayumu Sasaki crossed the line in 13th, as Angel Piqueras and Alex Escrig posted the final two points.
