Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has hinted at a possible expansion to the number of Sprint races in 2027 and beyond.
The reshuffled weekend format which first debuted during the 2021 season, has been a polarising addition to race weekends.
What started out as an experiment, with three events across the calendar, quickly expanded to six from 2023 onwards.
Domenicali and F1 have also made tweaks to the inherent format of Sprint races, with the view of making all three days of running, including a Friday, appealing to the fans.
The British GP has seemingly proved that point with a record attendance of 564,000 fans registered at Silverstone across the weekend.
“If you remember in the beginning, people were always sceptical of what we’re doing,” Domenicali said.
“We have the duty to be, in a way, brave and to think out of the box.
“I think you see the effect. Friday, with the people that we had at Silverstone, if you don’t give something that has to be an action, it would be wrong.”
F1 Sprint calendar expansion to be announced “very soon” – Domenicali
The race weekend at Silverstone was the fourth Sprint event of 2026, in nine rounds.
Zandvoort and the Marina Bay Street Circuit are now scheduled to hold the remaining two Sprint events of the year.
But heading into 2027, the number of Sprint races could be increased to as many as nine or 10, as per Sky Sports.
While the Italian did not concede to a number, he all but confirmed that new Sprint events will be added to the F1 calendar “very, very soon.”
“Therefore, I think that this is the way to go, and we are on the process of announcing the bigger number for the future,” Domenicali added.
“This will come when we announce the calendar very, very soon.”
