Kimi Antonelli completed a clean sweep of Friday practice at the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, finishing two tenths of a second ahead of the McLaren of Oscar Piastri.
Conditions for FP2 were as hot as ever in FP2, as the cars took to the track with an air temperature of 32 °C and a track temperature approaching 50 °C.
But it was Cadillac that felt the heat more than most, with a disastrous double retirement from the session. Perez, fresh from his issues earlier in the day, he took to the circuit only to pull up with a repeat issue, bringing out the Virtual Safety Car.
Teammate Valtteri Bottas compounded their issues only a few minutes later when his Cadillac started omitting smoke from the rear of the car, the team explaining that the car simply overheated.
At the front of the field, Norris had a spin at Turn 3, but was able to continue, via a quick trip into the pits for a checkover after he launched off the kerbs.
But it was Antonelli who secured the top spot for the second consecutive session, his time of 1:07.014, 0.237s ahead of Piastri’s McLaren. Norris was third, Verstappen fourth despite complaining of engine lag, while Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari completed the top six.
