Ash Sutton continued storming towards a record-breaking British Touring Car Championship title, taking an incredible victory at Oulton Park.
After a gripping Race 1 that saw Dan Cammish take victory, he was joined leading the field away by Josh Cook and Tom Ingram on the hard tyres. Adam Morgan also bolted them on, but was down in P20 after a disappointing mechanical issue at his home track.
And it was Cammish that led the field by the end of Old Hall. Ingram managed to get by Cook, as did Aron Taylor-Smith at Hislops.
Ash Sutton gained well on the first tour, jumping up to P4 as Cook fell one further. Tom Chilton and Daryl De Leon both gained well too, occupying P6 and P7.
Taylor-Smith tried to go around the outside of Ingram at Island Bend, but Ingram forced him onto the extreme outside line, sending him skipping across the grass as Sutton got by.
His excursion into the grass saw Chilton rise to challenge him too, with the hard-charging pair of Chilton and De Leon past Cook.
Showing sensational pace in the early laps, Sutton got past Ingram on the third – keen to chase down Cammish in front.
Chase down he did, getting by Cammish at Lodge corner – with the Race 1 winning driver not putting up much of a fight.
On the fourth lap, contact between Taylor-Smith and Chilton at Dentons saw the Team VERTU man forced onto the grass and sliding towards the gravel. He could continue, but in P20.
The contact benefited De Leon, who went one further by climbing into P5. Gordon Shedden and Ricky Collard were also enjoying a charging second race, with Shedden P7 and Collard P10.
A stacked battle for P4 commenced at the start of the sixth lap, involving Taylor, Smith, De Leon, Mikey Doble, Shedden, and Chris Smiley.
De Leon would get by Doble, while the fighting also allowed Dexter Patterson to join the hunt at the start of the seventh tour.
Collard would displace Smiley at the start of the eighth for P9, while Sutton had given himself a near-nine second gap to Cammish and Ingram behind.
De Leon started to struggle on the ninth tour, running into the grass at the exit of Island Bend and repeating that one lap later. He could keep Doble behind, as the multi-car battle for P4 continued.
With four to go, Sutton’s lead stood at 12 seconds, with all of the battling happening in the middle of the pack. But, Ingram finally managed to get by Cammish at Lodge – although it would be too late for him to hunt down the other NAPA Racing Ford.
A disappointing outing for Taylor-Smith continued as the trio of De Leon, Doble, and Shedden all managed to get past. Despite pre-race hopes of the softs being a weapon for him against Cammish, Cook, and Ingram on hards, the latter tyre seemed perfectly capable for those at the front.
At the flag, it was Sutton who took an incredible victory. 19 seconds behind was Ingram and Cammish, with De Leon and Doble rounding out the top five. De Leon’s result means that he claimed his first Independent victory of 2026.
The Laser Tools pair of Shedden and Taylor-Smith followed, with Collard, Patterson, and Rainford completing the top 10. The other scorers were Sam Osborne, Smiley, Dan Rowbottom, James Dorlin, and Lewis Selby.
Interestingly, rain started to fall on the final lap. Could we be in for a treat in Race 3?
Taylor-Smith was handed a 10-second penalty post-race for his guilt in sending Chilton off course, promoting Cook to the final points-paying position.
