Mick Schumacher has been named the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year for 2026.

The 27-year-old, former F1 driver is tackling a full IndyCar season this year with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

He finished 18th in his debut Indy 500 on Sunday, unlapping himself with 12 laps remaining to ensure he stayed on the lead lap and completed all 500 miles .

Schumacher was the only rookie of the four in the event to finish on the lead lap, although finishing position is only part of the equation that goes into the vote.

Permanent media members are invited to place their votes after the race for the “driver who has performed with the most distinction among first-year drivers in the Indianapolis 500.”

Voters are asked specifically to consider on track performance, media and fan interactions, sportsmanship, and overall positive influence on the Indy 500.

Jacob Abel, Caio Collet, and Dennis Hauger were the other Indy 500 rookies that were in contention for the award.

Collet was largely the best outright performer of the four, starting off right by topping the timesheets in the Indy 500 open test in late April.

He maintained strong pace throughout race day as well, leading nine laps and running in 11th position when he lost control of his car and suffered a fiery crash with eight laps remaining in the event.

The vote was not meant to represent the fastest driver, however, and covers all factors that lead to having the biggest presence at the event.

In addition to the bragging rights of being named Indy 500 Rookie of the Year, Schumacher earned a $50,000 bonus, bringing his total monetary award for the race up to $218,800.
