Alexander Rossi earned his best career grid position for the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, placing his #20 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevy in second place.
He was on the provisional pole for much of the session as well, but was ultimately beat out by a speedy Alex Palou.
After being with ECR for one and a half years, Rossi feels his team is in a better position than ever.
He pointed to the fact that the expectation within the team was that they could truly earn pole, instead of hoping just to make it to the final rounds.
“I think that the potential of this organization is borderline limitless, and it’s really cool to be a part of,” said Rossi.
“You know, this year has been has failed to meet expectations in some areas and exceeded in others, but internally we’re performing at a much higher level and doing a better job than we were last year even.
“The competitiveness, as David [Malukas] mentioned, of the organization, you know. Last year if you got into the top 12 or, you know, finished a race in the top 10, it was kind of, like, a good day.
“So far this year if that’s the case, people are pissed off, and that’s the mindset and mentality you have to have in this championship and what we’re going to keep as we improve.
“Hopefully one day can consistently be a part of these conversations.”
Rossi has finished in the top 10 three of the six races held so far this season, and sits 13th in the points.
A strong result at the upcoming Indy 500, or even a repeat of his 2016 victory, would go a long way to proving that he and his team a firing on all cylinders.
