Oliver Rowland admits to fine margins that cost him Formula E victory in Berlin

Oliver Rowland secured third place after a chaotic and strategy-heavy Berlin E-Prix, as late Attack Mode moves and energy management defined the outcome, but felt like he could have achieved more.

Energy proved decisive in the closing stages, and when asked by Motorsport Week, Rowland admitted small margins made the difference between victory and a podium finish.

“Well, 3% of energy, really,” the reigning World Champion said.

“But, no, it’s just those types of races, you know. If you find a good position, like Nico [Mueller, winner] did, where you don’t get fighting from behind, you can be a lot more efficient. And that was the thing for him.

“I think what didn’t help us was the Lolas went to the front. They picked up the pace. We consumed a lot, and then they slowed down.

“So, we were able to bunch back the field together, which wasn’t the best for me and Nick, that’s it.”

Rowland remained in the lead group throughout but faced constant pressure in a compressed pack, where strategy calls became critical.

He described a race shaped by difficult decisions around Pit Boost and Attack Mode, with driver input playing a key role.

“Yeah, it was tricky.

“I mean, the team were trying to call me in during the pit window quite early on, and I was pretty sure that I didn’t want to.

“So, I kind of stood firm on that, and I think it worked out quite well. For the attack mode, again, it was tricky.

“I was asking them, and I could sense they weren’t sure. And then I actually went, and they said, don’t go. But it was too late.

“I was kind of already there. But, you know, look, we discuss a lot of these things, and we have a really open relationship, let’s say, on that.

“And I have the authority to kind of sometimes overrule.”

Despite missing out on victory, Rowland took positives from the result, particularly after a strong showing in qualifying.

“I’m happy.

“Honestly, the biggest positive of the day was qualifying, because it’s something I’ve been struggling with all season.

“So, if I can keep building over the next two, three races, then I can get into the run like last year.”
