Jos Verstappen hits tree in frightening Belgian rally accident

Jos Verstappen, father of four-time Formula 1 World Champion Max, has walked away unharmed after a frightening rallying accident in which his car hit a tree.

The three-time F1 podium-finisher was competing in Rallye de Wallonie, the fourth round of the Belgian Rally Championship, when the accident occurred.

Verstappen, the reigning champion of the series, was apparently caught off guard by a left-right turn, which saw the left side of his Skoda Fabia collide with the tree, causing it to roll over.

The accident would have come as a shock to Verstappen and co-driver Jasper Vermeulen, who was deputising for the Dutchman’s usual co-driver Renaud Jamoul, who sat out the event through injury.

“It was Jasper’s first time using notes in English since we normally stick to our usual system, but everything went smoothly and the car felt great,” Verstappen Sr explained.

The Belgian Rally Championship continues on May 16, the same weekend Max partakes in the Nurburgring 24 Hours.
