Oliver Bearman has issued a new update on his health following his terrifying high-speed crash at the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix.

Bearman’s crash in Suzuka sparked headlines around the world due to its ferocity, the Briton suffering a 50G crash at Spoon Curve.

The cause was a 50 km/h closing speed on the Alpine on Franco Colapinto, forcing the Briton to take avoiding action while braking from over 150mph.

Walking away with contusions on his knee, he was signed off by doctors at the FIA medical centre, although in visible discomfort.

He has now issued a new update on his health, admitting that returning home from the race presented its own unique challenges.

“Yeah, I’m all good, thank you for asking, I appreciate it,” Bearman told Sportbible.

“It was tough [travelling home] just because obviously after [the crash], I wasn’t moving very much.

Oliver Bearman ready for Miami GP

Bearman considers himself “lucky” after the crash, revealing that he was back at work for Haas the same week, performing vital work ahead of Miami.

“I had a bit of swelling on the knee, but everything’s okay now, luckily, it was the right knee, so I was okay.

“Actually, I was back driving on the simulator by Wednesday or Thursday, because my brother and I were practicing for an endurance race on the weekend.

“It could have been a lot worse. So very, very thankful and looking forward to getting back out in Miami.”

Bearman’s update reveal both just how lucky the Briton was to emerge unscathed from his crash, while also highlighting the impact on his health in the immediate aftermath.

While not the sole cause, his crash will heavily influence the talks between the teams and the FIA to look at regulation changes ahead of Miami.

Anyone wanting to keep the regulations as they are need look no further than the accident as a reason for urgent change.
