Why George Russell’s F1 title hopes could already be under ‘threat’

George Russell is tipped to win the title but could someone stop him?

George Russell has long been the Formula 1 title favourite in 2026, but former race winner David Coulthard suggests his maiden title campaign could be under threat.

Since early testing, fans and Formula 1 pundits alike have tipped the experienced Mercedes driver to run away with the championship.

These predictions seemed accurate following Russell’s dominant Australian Grand Prix performance a fortnight ago in Melbourne.

However, the teenage prodigy Kimi Antonelli returned last time out in Shanghai, becoming the youngest ever pole sitter, then claiming his maiden F1 victory on Sunday, with Russell having to settle for second.

Mercedes very evidently has a clear competitive advantage over their rivals, with Ferrari the only team that has been able to challenge it.

However, the Italian outfit still has a lot of work ahead of it, which will likely make the title fight a battle between the Brackley-based duo.

Coulthard highlighted that this intra-team battle with Mercedes could be similar to the infamous Papaya Rules battle that McLaren had previously.

The Former F1 driver emphasised that Russell, as the experienced driver, knows he has a “real threat” from his team-mate, and must perform to his best to beat him.

“George knows he has a real threat for this championship,” Coulthard said on the Up to Speed podcast.

‘This might be, as we’ve seen with Lando and Oscar last year, McLaren reached a point where they delivered them a car, and they fought for the world championship.

Amazingly, they (McLaren) almost lost out to Max by a couple of points.

But this could be the only time in this new era of F1 that Mercedes gives them (George and Kimi) the advantage they’ve got.”

Mercedes’ intra-team battle will heat up in Suzuka

Mercedes must remain focused on the present

Russell and Antonelli may have a strong friendship now, but a title fight between teammates has historically tested the limits of inter-team relationships.

With only four points separating the pair heading into the Japanese Grand Prix later this week, the first test is upon Mercedes.

Coulthard emphasises that the drivers can, and should, respect each other as rivals; however, he highlights that the pair are fighting each other for one of Motorsports’ most sought-after titles, not often won by being friends with your closest rival.

“So make no bones about it – George, behind that facade of ‘well done, Kimi’, is trying to get every advantage he can over him for Suzuka and the next grands prix,” Coulthard said.

“Kimi’s team should be doing the same. The name teammates is a misnomer. He’s not your mate.

If you get along with him away from the track, that’s great – but his success is your failure, and vice versa.”

Coulthard’s comments highlight the double-edged sword facing Mercedes. Both drivers are fighting for wins, and a flashpoint for a more intense duel is likely not too far away.
