Mick Schumacher claimed his maiden victory in the FIA Formula 2 championship after leading from start to finish at the Hungaroring.

Schumacher enjoyed the fruits of a reverse grid pole position and made the most of it as he got away from the line and immediately blocked the Carlin of Nobuharu Matsushita as the lights went out.

The Japanese driver attempted a pass into Turn 1 but was shuffled out to the runoff area by Schumacher on the exit of the corner.

In a race which forced drivers to look after the Pirelli rubber right from the start of the race, it was a timid affair in the early laps.

However, Matsushita consistently pressured the young German throughout the race, closing to within half a second with a handful of laps to go but Schumacher resisted the intense pressure to hold on for his first win.

DAMS' Sergio Sette Camara claimed the final spot on the podium in third, the Brazilian ran with Schumacher and Matsushita in the early stages but after a failed attempt to pass the Japanese driver, Camara fell back and unable to keep pace with the leaders.

Jordan King finished in fourth for MP Motorsport, picking up his best result of the season since his podium in the Azerbaijan Feature Race, behind him in fifth was fellow British driver Jack Aitken in fifth for Campos Racing.

Championship contenders Nyck De Vries, Nicholas Latifi and Luca Ghiotto crossed the line from sixth to eighth respectively. the Dutchman now holds a 30 point lead over Latifi going into the summer break with Ghiotto a further 15 points behind.

Ghiotto's UNI-Virtuosi team-mate Guanyu Zhou finished ninth ahead of Callum Ilott in the Sauber Junior Team by Charouz car to round out the top 10.

ART Grand Prix's Nikita Mazepin made places at the start of the race but became the first victim to suffer from heavy tyre wear and fell down the order.

Tatiana Calderon was the only retirement after coming together with Arjun Maini on lap 8, the Indian driver went down the inside T1, Calderon then turned in on the Campos driver and damaged her suspension forcing her out of the race.

Formula 2 will return to action on August 30 to September 1 in Spa Francorchamps, Belgium.
