Red Bull has suffered a major exit of one of its key technical personnel ahead of the new Formula 1 season.

Chief designer Craig Skinner has departed the Milton Keynes-based squad on the eve of the new season, as F1 prepares to enter its new era of technical regulations.

Skinner joined the team in 2006, having already completed work for it as part of Fluent [now ANSYS Fluent], as a CFD engineer, which also meant work for both Williams and Jordan teams.

Upon joining Red Bull proper, Skinner began under the same CFD brief, and subsequently moved up to that department’s leader three years later.

Becoming its aerodynamic Deputy Head in 2014, Skinner became Chief Aerodynamicist in 2018, before becoming Chief Designer in 2022, working closely with Technical Director, Adrian Newey.

Skinner has therefore been part of the key team that has designed a number of championship-winning Red Bull machines.

“After 20 years with the team, Craig Skinner, our Chief Designer, will be leaving the Red Bull Technology team,” the team said in a statement.

“Craig has been an integral part of our team and its success, and we would like to thank him for his hard work and commitment.

“The whole Red Bull team wishes him all the best for the future.”

It is thought that Skinner has left the team of his own accord, and the exit is not related to the recent further exodus of staff that saw much of the remainder of the Christian Horner era axed.
