Fernando Alonso appeared awestruck about the influence of Aston Martin Formula 1 Team Principal Adrian Newey, saying that he “always has something to teach us”.
The famed British designer will lead the Silverstone-based squad this year, and has designed the AMR26, which took to the track over the last two days of this week’s pre-season test.
Perhaps the most anticipated car the team has produced, it appears to feature many hallmark Newey traits, as well as appearing to look more radical than that of Aston’s rivals’ cars.
Alonso was spotted arriving at the Circuit de-Barcelona Catalunya on Thursday, when team-mate Lance Stroll completed five laps, with a beaming smile.
And speaking to Spanish media, Alonso appeared to wax lyrical about the 67-year-old’s influence, having spent most of his 2025 squirrelled away, designing the new challenger.
“All the mechanics look to him, in case he points out a detail on the car or something that can be improved,” he was quoted as saying.
“He always has something to teach us.”
Alonso reportedly completed 49 laps on Friday, following on from Stroll’s Thursday cameo, which ended with a on-track stoppage, thought to be down to an electrical issue.
At 44, Alonso is the true elder statesman of F1, and the prospect of sport’s greatest modern era talents pairing up with one of the most successful designers is a mouthwatering prospect for many fans.
