Juri Vips holds off Jehan Daruvala to win Silverstone Race 1

Juri Vips stormed to his second FIA Formula 3 victory of 2019, holding off Prema Racing's Jehan Daruvala to win at Silverstone.

Starting from pole position, Vips took a lights to flag victory, however, faced stiff opposition from his fellow front-row starter throughout the 20-lap affair.

While Vips established a lead early on, Daruvala remained in-touch with the Red Bull-backed Estonian, remaining within DRS range with the aim to pounce later in the race.

Following a 1-lap Virtual Safety Car for a stoppage for debutant Federico Malvestitti, Daruvala had his best shot at taking the lead, lunging around the outside of Vips into Turn 6 only to run off the racing surface, falling under pressure to Prema team-mate Marcus Armstrong.

A crash for Raoul Hyman resulted in the deployment of the saftey car on lap 10, with this resulting in a 5-lap break in racing which allowed Vips to have a chance to think about his final defence to the chequered flag.

Securing a strong restart, Vips remained unchallenged to the line to take his second win of 2019 while Daruvala took second place, holding off Armstrong who stood on the final step of the podium.

Leonardo Pulcini missed out on the podium by finishing in fourth while Robert Schwartzman maintained his run of finishing inside the top five, overtaking Christian Lundgaard on lap 18 to take fifth place despite evidently struggling for pace in the British leg of the 2019 season.

Pedro Piquet took sixth while Lundgaard was seventh with 17-year-old Liam Lawson finishing in eighth place to secure pole position for the second race of the weekend.

Austria race winner Jake Hughes finished in ninth place for HWA Racelab while Campos Racing's Alexander Peroni completed the top 10, overtaking David Beckmann late on to secure the final points-paying position.
