The first Grand Prix-winning Formula 1 car of Michael Schumacher – the Benetton B192 – is up for sale for an expected fetching price of $10 million.
Michael Schumacher is one of the most iconic drivers to have ever graced the storied F1 rostrum.
Having won five consecutive titles with Ferrari between 2000 and 2004, the German is statistically the most successful F1 driver with seven championships to his name – only equalled by Lewis Hamilton.
Naturally, memorabilia attached to Schumacher is always expected to fetch a handsome price and attention from fans of the sport.
The 57-year-old burst onto the F1 scene with Jordan in 1991 at the Spa-Francorchamps Circuit. He immediately turned a lot of heads in the paddock with the seventh-fastest lap during Qualifying on his debut.
Chief amongst them was Flavio Briatore, who was heading Benetton [now Alpine’s] operations. And while Schumacher DNF’ed out of the race with clutch troubles, he returned to Belgium the following year in a Benetton.
Schumacher would go on to win the race, marking his maiden F1 win. In a season dominated by Williams’ Nigel Mansell, en route to the title that season, Schumacher followed home third in the standings with seven more podiums to his name.
The chassis that Schumacher ran at Belgium; the B192-05, is now on auction by Broad Arrow Auctions, a Hagerty undertaking.
The car has been completely restored, including a chassis overhaul and an engine and gearbox rebuild. Owned by Laurent Redon since 2015, F1’s final manual transmission car to win a Grand Prix will be available for sale to the public for the very first time.
And the car is expected to fetch well beyond its listed price of $10 million.
