It was a Formula 1 season with an intriguing title battle, but there unfortunately weren’t a huge number of standout Grands Prix or scintillating moments.
The one that immediately stands out was Nico Hulkenberg’s podium at Silverstone, as the journeyman finally righted a statistical wrong in shock circumstances, as he and the team nailed every strategic call on a day when many others faltered.
The celebrations at Sauber afterwards highlighted the esteem in which Hulkenberg is held, with the entire team piling into the motorhome before sprawling out into the paddock and the garage. Sauber did have some champagne, but they were gifted several more bottles by delighted rivals, with “Nico’s on fire” belted out by the personnel on more than one occasion.
