Pepe Marti was mercifully “fine” after what he described as a “scary” crash which occurred in the final stages of the Formula E Sao Paulo E-Prix.

The first round of Season 12 took place with excitement peaking in the final laps.

Among the various curiosities to observe on the grid, the public looked with interest at Marti, the only true rookie at the start of this season.

The young signing from the Cupra Kiro team is the only Spaniard on the grid, and was the last signing in the busy Formula E market in recent months.

Marti, who had a good race, did not see the chequered flag, however. With a few laps to go, he was the victim of a serious accident under the ‘full course yellow’ regime.

Marti miscalculated the distances with Antonio Felix da Costa, who was in front of him. The Kiro pilot did not slow down in time, colliding with the Jaguar and then taking flight.

Marti’s car overturned twice before ending up on the asphalt and catching fire. The role of the halo present, which protected the pilot’s safety, proved crucial once again.

The Spaniard, in fact, got out of the car unharmed, leaving the track on his own two feet.

A shame for Marti, who was in the points area before the accident, compounding a nightmare weekend for Kiro, who saw both his drivers retire, with Dan Ticktum retiring a few laps earlier.

After the race, the rookie spoke on Kiro socials: “I’m all fine, it was a big scary shunt,” he said, adding: “We were looking very well until then, easily in the top eight. Just a shame, I’m sorry for the team”.

The Sao Paulo track is no stranger to this type of crash: right here, last year, Pascal Wehrlein overturned after hitting the wall.

The technology that the cars are supplied with ensured that in both situations, the drivers were not harmed.
