Yuki Tsunoda will not be on the 2026 grid

Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies has revealed Yuki Tsunoda will continue to “provide invaluable support” to the team despite missing out on a seat in Formula 1 in 2026.

Tsunoda will not be on the grid next season amid the expected announcement that Isack Hadjar will succeed him to partner Max Verstappen in Red Bull’s senior side.

But although he was also overlooked to make a return to satellite squad Racing Bulls, Tsunoda will remain within the Red Bull stable in 2026 in a test and reserve role.

And while Tsunoda will be resigned to a stint on the sidelines, Mekies is optimistic that he can support Red Bull’s endeavours as it tackles the sport’s new regulations.

“Yuki has raced in Red Bull colours for seven years now and I have had the pleasure of working with him at both Red Bull teams,” Mekies addressed.

“Through his five seasons so far, Yuki has matured into a complete racer, good over a single lap on Saturday and capable of exceptional starts and excellent race craft on Sunday.

“Everyone in the sport would agree it is impossible not to like Yuki, his personality is infectious, and he has become a very special part of the Red Bull family.

“On behalf of everyone at Red Bull, I thank him for what he has contributed so far and we know he will provide invaluable support to the 2026 projects moving forwards.”

Having already shared a podium in 2025, can an Isack Hadjar and Max Verstappen driver lineup thrive in 2026?

Why Red Bull sees Hadjar as suitable fit

Tsunoda has been the latest to struggle in the second seat at Red Bull, which has become renowned as a poisoned chalice since Daniel Ricciardo’s departure in 2018.

However, Mekies believes that Hadjar, who collected his maiden podium at the Dutch Grand Prix in August, possesses both the speed and maturity to buck that trend.

“As for Isack, in his first F1 season, he has displayed great maturity and proved to be a quick learner,” the Frenchman explained.

“Most importantly, he has demonstrated the raw speed that is the number one requirement in this sport.

“We believe Isack can thrive alongside Max and produce the magic on track!

“2026 will be a huge challenge for the Team and for Red Bull Ford Powertrains, these are exciting times, and I am looking forward to seeing what we can do together.”
