Guenther Steiner: No doubt over Haas’ pure pace after Spain display

Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner says there is “no doubt” that the squad has a fundamentally fast car, following its performance at last weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Haas finished as Formula 1’s midfield leader in Australia and followed it up with a best-of-the-rest qualifying display in Bahrain, but slipped back in race trim.

It also struggled for race pace in China and Azerbaijan, a problem it attributed to the manner in which the VF-19 was utilising its tyres.

Haas prevailed in the midfield fight in Spain with Kevin Magnussen battling his way past team-mate Romain Grosjean to take seventh place.

“Coming [to Spain] we knew from testing that we can get the tyre to work,” said Steiner.

“It is obviously a sign of progress from Baku, because Baku was pretty dull for us. Before that we always had the cars in the top 10 in qualifying.

“We know the speed of the car, just at certain tracks we cannot get the tyres to work and in Spain it is working. We are on the limit, we get it in but what we need to do is find a way to make it work everywhere.

“It’s clear that the car is good, there’s no doubt about the speed of the car

“Hopefully we can do well in Monte Carlo, and my bigger concern now is that our car is performing in Monte Carlo and Canada.”

Magnussen, speaking after Wednesday’s test day, added: “The tyres just seem to be working.

“We have tried a lot of different things to put ourselves in different scenarios and conditions I guess.

“[Monaco] is a very different track and is a very low-energy circuit for the tyres. Let’s see if we can make the tyres work there.”
