Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has revealed the unique circumstances that meant he had to “recalibrate” his approach to Formula 1 contract negotiations with George Russell.

Russell has been a Mercedes academy driver since the inception of his single-seater career.

Making his debut for Williams in 2019, he finally made the step up to the Brackley-based squad at the turn of the ground effects era in 2022.

That said, despite some strong results for the Silver Arrows this year, it wasn’t until earlier this month that the team confirmed him for next year.

Amid protracted negotiations with the Briton, the rumour mill was churning with persistent interest from Wolff to poach Max Verstappen from Red Bull.

The Dutchman was reportedly disillusioned with the Milton Keynes-based cascading dip in form and was in talks with Mercedes.

However, these rumors quickly petered out with Verstappen pledging his allegiance to Red Bull for at least the 2026 season at the Dutch Grand Prix weekend.

After announcing Russell’s contract extension, however, Wolff revealed that signing the deal was only a matter of when and not if.

But reports suggest that Russell’s contract is only for the 2026 season with an option to extend for 2027 if he meets the prescribed performance criteria.

Wolff has now revealed an added dynamic that complicated the approach he had to take during negotiations with the Briton.

With Lewis Hamilton’s departure and 18-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s promotion, this season, Russell found himself as the de facto leader of the team for the first time.

“If you sign a contract or a renewal of a contract with a driver that has progressed from being on a more junior side to the lead driver, who has shown what he is able to do, you just need to readjust, you just need to recalibrate certain terms,” he explained.

“This is what we did, and that’s done now.”
