George Russell honoured long-time hero Lewis Hamilton following his dominant win in Formula 1‘s Singapore Grand Prix.
Russell recreated his ex-team-mate’s iconic 2018 Instagram post to bring his F1 journey to a full-circle moment.
The 27-year-old pulled off a clinical performance on the streets of Singapore, securing pole position and a commanding race victory.
Post-race, Russell sat cross-legged on the asphalt, trophy by his side, hands folded in his lap, and a satisfied smile on his face.
An image F1 fans have seen from a Mercedes driver before, harking back to Hamilton’s 2018 Singapore GP victory shot.
This tribute was deeply personal to Russell, who let fans know through his caption.
“In 2018, I was with Mercedes in Singapore and watched Lewis take an incredible pole position and then win the race,” Russell posted.
“I remember seeing him take a very cool pic on the circuit after the win, and of myself dreaming of being in F1.”
Hamilton responds to Russell tribute
At the time, he was a Mercedes Junior driver, racing in Formula 2 alongside drivers such as Lando Norris and Alex Albon.
Russell was truly on the outside looking in, aiming to one day be in Lewis’ position.
However, that same year, Russell went on to claim the F2 championship and secure a full-time F1 seat with Williams, staking his claim as a rising star.
“7 years later, it’s a special moment for me to win here in Singapore and to celebrate the moment with my team,” Russell reflected
Meanwhile, Hamilton took it upon himself to let his pride be known for Russell, taking to Instagram to comment under his ex-team-mate’s post.
“Mega drive, George, proud of you and the team! Keep up the great work🙏🏾👊🏾”
