Liam Lawson has said that he is unsure “what’s going on” as to the nature of his Formula 1 future, as he affirms his aim of retaining his Racing Bulls seat for next year.
The Kiwi has showed marked improvement in his performance as the European leg of the season has progressed, after his horror start to the campaign with Red Bull.
After being unceremoniously sent back to the Faenza-based satellite squad after just two races, Lawson had to readjust and compete with hotshot rookie Isack Hadjar in the sister car.
Lawson was able to kickstart his campaign with an eighth-place finish in Monaco, before reaching a personal peak at Austria.
Out-qualifying Max Verstappen for sixth, Lawson kept the position at the finish, finishing just five seconds behind George Russell’s Mercedes.
Two more top 10 finishes were secured in Belgium and Hungary, with another looking set to be completed before his incident with Carlos Sainz curtailed his points finish hopes.
Naturally, it may appear as a somewhat disappointing year, given his Red Bull ousting and being outscored by Hadjar, who has taken F1 by storm.

But Lawson has revealed ahead of this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix that he has laser-sharp focus on performing at his absolute best to ensure he remains with the team next season.
“Honestly it’s not really something I’m thinking about,” he told media including Motorsport Week. “It’s more for me just maximising every weekend’s ends.
“I don’t know when it’s being decided and what’s going on there but for us as drivers we’re focused on these races, that’s what I’m thinking about right now.
“We have nine more this year and a lot can happen in those nine races so for me it’s about securing a place in Formula 1 honestly.
“It’s been a very hectic year after everything, so I think for me, I’m more focused on securing a seat and having a good strong second half of the season.”
